Community of Practice (CoP) Sustainability in Healthcare Procurement

Card
The Community of Practice on Sustainability in Healthcare Procurement builds on the foundation of the finalized EU project Procure4Health (P4H) and aims to create lasting frameworks for sustainable procurement across Europe. This collaborative initiative brings together healthcare purchasers and industry to co-develop consensus-based sustainability criteria, with a current focus on medical devices. Sustainable procurement goes beyond environmental concerns. It encompasses economic, social, and environmental value, encouraging purchasing decisions that balance cost-efficiency, long-term outcomes, and system-wide impact. It prioritizes overall value not just the lowest price by promoting responsible sourcing, reducing waste, and ensuring that procurement decisions contribute positively to patient care, workforce wellbeing, and public health.

Sustainability in Healthcare Procurement

Sustainability in healthcare means ensuring that health systems can continue to deliver value over time — economically, clinically, socially, and environmentally. In the context of procurement, sustainability includes:

Financial Sustainability

Making purchasing decisions that balance cost-efficiency with long-term value and system-wide impact.

Sustainable Value

Procuring goods and services that support better outcomes for patients, health systems and health workforce in the long term compared to the resources spent — not just lowest cost, but best overall value.

Environmental & Social Responsibility

Considering environmental impact, ethical sourcing, and supplier practices in decision-making.
Sustainable procurement helps healthcare systems improve patient outcomes, contributes to the resilience of health systems, maximizes value for money, reduces waste and inefficiency, builds resilient supply chains and supports long-term health and financial goals.
